The hypnotic world of Medusa Cyclone began in 1992, following the breakup of
legendary Detroit psych/punk outfit ViV Akauldren. ViV keyboardist and Medusa Cyclone
frontman, Keir McDonald, wanted to continue the space-rock approach that made ViV
famous on both sides of the Atlantic. Medusa Cyclones first release was in 1992 on Manta
Ray Fleet, a Detroit-based 7 label started by McDonald and Chris Girard. Although Manta
Ray Fleet worked in small runs of about 200, the label enjoyed a strong following in the lofi
underground of the early 1990s. Early fans included Stephen Malkmus and Mark ... Read more »

Two gals and one guy from Cincinnati. A great album from the  1990s- lots of nice guitar-y jangle pop and female vocals (like an underproduced  Let's Active), and then the guy shows up with his crappy distortion pedal and  makes it sound like Beat Happening's snotty little brother.

And then the  third track, "Let's Smoke," and the eighth track, "Pussy Strut" could be the a-  and b-side of some lost garage 45.

    Download it here.

    Enjoy, and Happy New Year!

First and, unfortunately, last album from an incredible  Iowa quartet that traded in medium-loud, complex guitar rocka la Television or  Dumptruck. Almost psychedelic in its shifting textures and lyrical imagery, but  always melodic, this is an important album. (WWW Music Database)

Iowa has  long been a fertile breeding ground for driving pop bands. With guitarists Mike  Sangster and Doug Roberson coming from two such bands, the Hollowmen and the Dangtrippers respectively, Head Candy is poised  to carry on the tradition. Sangster's vocals oscillate between an uneasy tension  and a mellow smoothness in much the same way that Head Candy's songs reflect  both a world-weary callousness and a vulnerable ... Read more »

    THE FLOWERS OF ROMANCE
A brief history of the band as written by mrs Darkness: Flowers Of Romance was one of the most successful groups to emerge from the Greek rock scene of the 1990s. They started more or less as a pure punk band (although already their first album, Dorian Grey, showed signs of poppiness and gothic influences as well), then moved closer to traditional gothic rock with the album Pleasure & The Pain and then exploded into a gazillion of styles, combining missionesque riffs, gloomy atmospheres, and electronic pulses with a newly-found love for jazz, industrial, and spaghetti-western film scores.

The band was originally formed on February 2nd, 1981 by members Mike Pougounas-vocals (later will perform keyboards and sy... Read more »

The Hundredth Monkey - 1986 - Mute  Lament

Hundredth Monkey formed at 1983 by Stephen Jay Morris  (vocals), Tim Konspiracy (Kummerow) (drums), Pat Amodeo (bass), Tom Carpenter  (keyboards), and Brad Frost (guitar). The first two came from the LA punk band  Benedict Arnold & the Traitors. With this line-up released a 7' (Quicksand/  Rugged Individual, 1983, Veracious Records). Around 1985 they became a trio with  Brad Frost, Tim Kummerow and Ian Montgomery (bass) and the next year released  their only LP "Mute Lament", again on Veracious Records, with Frost as main  songwriter. The cover was made by the famous Robert Williams. They lasted 'till  1989. After that Kummerow and Montgomery formed Pendu Femmele, a band with no  vinyl or CD output (only an entire album in MP3.com in its glori... Read more »

    9 Women In Uniform
    10 Spike The Dike
    11 Franco-America

Tripod Jimmie "Long Walk Off a Short Pier" Do Speak do3, 1982.

*** Terrific debut from the band led by ex- Pere Ubu guitarist, Tom Hermann. Great post-punk/funk stuff: agile drumming, meaty basslines, Hermann's lacerating guitar and his Byrne-like voice. Not dissimilar in places to early Talking Heads, but not as mannered. Excellent live-in-studio recording made "on the shore of Lake Erie." I became aware of this fantastic lp when avid fan, Steve Albini played it on a local radio show. References: Come On, The Fall, Styrenes, Electric Eels, Mirrors, Couch Flambeau. ***
