An obscure rocking funk combo from the early 70s -- one of a few, like Sweet Apple or High Voltage, who seemed to crop up on Columbia after the success of Sly & The Family Stone. Like those groups, and Sly, Mother Night's got a guitar-driven groove that was probably easy funk for the crossover crowd -- but like Sweet Apple, they're a bit hard-driven, with a heavy sound that really takes them over the top with a wild energy that probably kept them off of radio, and stuck in the underground. Lots of nice jamming, though, and these guys really know how to lay some jazzy chords into the mix to keep things fresh! Titles include "Julie Nixon", "Utopia", "Scuffle", "Warm Spot", "Groupie", "Guitar Man", and "Fools Are You" (from Dusty Groove America)

Givin' It Back is as much a time capsule as an album. Not that it
can't be enjoyed on its own absolute musical terms by someone just off
a boat who wasn't even around in 1971, but to really appreciate how
daring it was and how delightful it is, that side of its history should
be known. Those who are old enough should recall the time whence it
came, an era in which hatred and disunity over the Vietnam War, civil
rights, school desegregation, the environment, and a multitude of other
issues were threatening what seemed, potentially, like the beginning of
a new civil war, this one not between states but between factions and
ethnic and racial groups in 1,000 individual neighborhoods. The opening
cut of Givin' It Back, "Ohio/Machine Gun," is a slap-in-your-face
reminder of just how angry the times and the people were. The track

Ms Z was Zulema’s second album after her self-titled
debut. Again, like her first LP, Zulema not only sang, but wrote most
of her own material. She starts off great with Giving Up that has a
sophisticated and heavily orchestrated neo-Disco beginning that’s
contrasted with some funky wah wah guitar work. Also worth listening to
are the slower and Gospel tinged I’m Watchin You and the funkier
Telling The World Good Bye.

Perfect Circle were another Paul Mack discovery and George Semper once again
was caught choosing whether he should work with one band over another.
He turned down Mandrill to finish up work on the now collectible
Perfect Circle album that blended funk, soul and disco influences.

Gladys Knight & The Pips - 1971 - Standing Ovation
Almost a deeper soul sound than before from Gladys Knight -- a record that features some very strong southern-styled production from Johnny Bristol and Clay McMurray
-- but in a way that reflects the new sort of "adult" mode of the time!
The style here is a careful blend of the raspiness of Knight's roots
and some of the changes going on in Memphis and Muscle Shoals -- modes
that are still a bit down home, but which show a more mature
presentation of their themes -- served up in arrangements by HB Barnum,
David Van DePitte, and Paul Riser.

The Politicians - Psycha-Soula-Funkadelic

rare groove quintet, were obviously influenced by the Parliament. This
album was cut in 1972 in the midst of the invictus/hotwax regime. If you like raw, guitar influenced funk this is an album you can not overlook !

How
this title managed to get buried so deep inside of the Stax catalog of
classic material I don't know. What I do know that is Ghetto:
