    (us cover)

Actually credited as 'Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come', anyone expecting to hear something along the lines of 'Fire' was probably disappointed by 1974's "Journey".  This time around the Brown and company opted for a surprisingly aggressive set that mixed progressive moves such as the extended opener 'Time Captives' with extended instrumental segments.  With the focus on synthesizers (courtesy of keyboardist Victor Peraino), various electronic production enhancement and an irritating Bentley Rhythm Ace drum machine, to my ears heavily orchestrated tracks such as 'Gypsy' and 'Superficial Roadblocks' just never seemed to get going.  Luckily, when spotlighted, Brown's eccentric voice and mannerisms remained instantly recognizable.  While rather far and few between, the album managed to cough up a couple of redeeming moments.  'Spirit of Joy' and 'Come Alive' boasted fairly conventional rock structures (the latter had some nice guitar from A ... John Fred & His Playboy Band was formed in 1955 by 14-year old John Fred Gourrier, a basketball/baseball player at LSU and Southeastern Louisiana University as "The Redcaps”, but in 1956 one of the members of the group who was a big reader of Playboy magazine suggested they rename the group to "The Playboys”. Sam Montalbano”, the president and owner of "Montel” records who also managed the local Catholic Youth Center would hold dances and sock hops. He booked John and his group and a close friend Johnny Ramistella (better known as Johnny Rivers) to as many of them as they could make. With his help the group released a few singles to little success, and they toured the US with Jimmy Clanton, Roy Orbison, Thomas Wayne and Duane Eddy. In 1960 John decides to attend college and at 6 foot 5 inches tall was a decent basketball player. After graduation he formed a new group and they started recording and releasing singleson the small independent label "N Joy” records, like Boogie Children (John Lee Hooker), Dial 101 (Cause I Still Love You), You’re Mad At Me and How Can I Prove. In July 1966 they sign a ... Read more »

This is the rarest of unknown, anonymous English prog-psych from 1971, with only one known copy left in existence -- a perfect acetate. The Image Maker Vol. 1 & 2 is a real underground concept album with a progressive touch that only needs a few spins to get it right. Well-crafted songs, great vocals, sound-effects, organ and heavy fuzz guitar all combine to make up one of the better albums on the Vertigo label with a good dose of acid in it.

Shadoks Music spoke to Geoff Oliver, the former owner of IBC recording studios, but he could not remember any of the recordings made by Shuttah in his studio -- there were just too many engineers busy at the same time, during those golden days of the London underground, where studios were recording music which became big hits. IBC was famous for making recordings for bands such as The Kinks, The Who and The Beatles, plus many, many others, which leads one to the conclusion that this recording of Shuttah was very expensive to make, so there MUST be a famous musician behind it.

The recording, arrangements and concepts are on a very high professional level. Even a search at UK copyri ... Read more »

The Loading Zone was one of the first Bay Area bands to incorporate a horn section into the emerging psychedelic sound emanating out of San Francisco. Formed in Oakland in 1967 by keyboard player and vocalist, Paul Fauerso, the Loading Zone opened many a show at the Fillmore, supporting acts like Cream, Big Brother & The Holding Company, the Grateful Dead, and many others. From the Berkeley psychedelic-rock band, the Marbles, Fauerso recruited both guitarists, Pete Shapiro and Steve Dowler. The rhythm section of Bob Kridle and George Newcom held down the bottom end, forming the core group. Though rooted in R&B, the group also veered off into psychedelia, rock, jazz, and electric blues initially. Adding horns to the mix, they paved the way for bands like Tower Of Power. In early 1968, Fauerso placed an ad in the San Francisco Chronicle seeking a new lead vocalist, resulting in Linda Tillery joining the band just prior to them signing with RCA Records. Tillery was the key ingredient; a charismatic singer who became the focal point on stage and her powerful voice ... Read more »

Locomotive were a somewhat legendary band that came out of Birmingham in the late sixties. As an aside an early line up of the band featured Traffic's Chris Wood and Black Sabbaths first manager Jim Simpson. Sax player Dick Heckstall Smith also guests on this the bands only album. The album opens up with the track Overture which leads into the single Mr Armageddon. Despite being of its time this album still has something special about it and perhaps it is the mixture of jazz, psychedelia and progressive rock that lends it an air of something special. Certainly there was nothing like this blend around at the time with most bands tending to go with one of the aforementioned genres rather than the eclectic mix Locomotive employed.

Other tracks of note are There's Got To Be A Way and A Day In Shining Armour. The record company have also decided to include a number of bonus tracks such as the original mono mix of the single Mr. Armageddon and You Must Be Joking neither of which have ever been released on CD before nor obvio ... Australian supergroup of the early 70s, don't pay attention to the horrible cover, this album has some great, rockin' songs and Bobbi Marchini was a powerfull singer, following the Janis Joplin tradition.

In early '72 several Hunger members hooked up with producer-singer-songwriter G.Wayne Thomas, who had recently made his name with production and songs for the hugely successful MORNING OF THE EARTH soundtrack. Bobbi Marchini, John Robinson and Steve Webb became the core a new "supergroup" called Duck, with the lineup completed renowned jazzer and session pianist Bobby Gebert (who worked with many well-known rock bands including Tully), bassist Teddy Toi (ex-Aztecs, Fanny Adams, Wild Cherries and percussionist Larry Duryea (ex Tamam Shud.

Thomas originally intended Duck as a 'studio-only' project, featuring only cover versions of songs by major overseas acts. No doubt this was to maximise his own earnings on the album (and presumably the group were only paid session rates). They recorded 16 tracks at Melbourne's TCS Studios, although only 12 were eventually released. Singer Jon English (ex- ... Read more »
