Info:
This one is probably the biggest obscurity on the list-Mexican heavy psych at its pinnacle. Here's a good case study in why the power trio is best. The first Dug Dug's album had 5 members or so playing on it, and while it's still a cool album, it gets too bogged down in generic hippy psychedelia to really make an impact. For their second album, "Smog," band leader Armando Nava stripped it down to a three-piece, resulting in this masterpiece.
All the lyrics are in Spanish [the only word I can make out on the whole album is "marijuana", which should give you a sense of where these guys were coming from], but it is the music that really counts here. I still remember the first time that I played the album's 11-minute epic "Hagamoslo Ahora" for our drummer, Will. From the first moment that he heard those relentless double bass drums [which never let up for the entire song], I knew he was hooked. It was no surprise when, at next rehearsal, Will showed up with two bass drums of his own and proceeded to kick some serious ass on the skins. Viva los Dug Dug's!
